I don’t give a fuck

April 10, 2017 by Anthony Mattke Leave a Comment

Recently a colleague referred me to a blog post, turned book, called The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck. Written in 2015 by Mark Manson, this thought experiment has garnered quite a bit of attention. I had previously heard of the book, and had actually put it on my Amazon.com wish-list. But I hadn’t really taken the time to do much research about it until now. I imagine you and I both immediately came to the wrong conclusion… Not giving a fuck isn’t about giving up on the world and drowning in a sea of apathetic pacifism. It’s about rising above the noise, and letting those who are in your way know that you will do whatever it takes, and that you simply don’t give a fuck what they have to say about that. Once I started reading the post, I started making some correlations to things I read many years ago. An ideology that many of you know I take to heart. Taoism – the ancient art of not giving a fuck.

So, Taoism – where do I begin? The Chinese practitioners of Taoism is the practice of “The Way”, it denotes the principles of the “Three Treasures”, Compassion, Frugality, and Humility. The Tao also teach of the Dynamic Balance of nature. The Yin and the Yang, the Sun and The Moon, Light and Dark, Chaos and Order. Everything finds balance. Another important principle of Taoism is Wu Wei, or effortless action. Wu Wei is a powerful concept that cultivates a state of being in which our actions are effortlessly put in alignment with the ebb and flow of the world around us. To simplify, think of it as “going with the flow”, but in practice it is much deeper than that. In short Taoism is all about finding our place with the cosmos, that our actions do no harm, and that we are spontaneously virtuous… Over simplified, I know.. But It’s the best I can do while keeping your attention. If you’re curious, go read this. It’s an excellent translation of the Tao Te Ching.

Fuck or Fuck not, there is not fuck to give…
Fuck or Fuck not, there is not fuck to give…

I can’t talk about Taoism without bringing up Dudeism. I am after-all an ordained Dudeist Priest. So, what is Dudeism? This should be a bit easier to describe… Dudeism is a modern philosophy and lifestyle heavily influenced by Taoism which removes the metaphysical and medical doctrines. Dudeism advocates going with the flow, and a perpetual mindset of taking it easy, to use the parlance of our times. Dudeists believe that is where true harmony lies. Fulfillment of your life comes from the enjoyment of drinking with your friends, bowling, and taking a long bath. These things a Dudeist prefers as opposed to the accumulation of wealth and things.

Fans of the Big Lebowski are not the only ones to not giving a fuck. As a matter of fact, 23 years prior to the founding of Dudeism, Benjamin Hoff wrote his first book on Taoism as it relates to the world of Winnie the Pooh. The Tao of Pooh is a primer for those seeking information on the Eastern religion of Taoism. In 1992 Hoff follow-up his book with a second, The Te of Piglet. Te or De is a key concept in Chinese philosophy, usually translated as “inner power” or “integrity”. In Confucianism this concept is more commonly translated as “virtue”. The Taoist concept of Virtue of the small is certainly portrayed well by someone as innocuous as Piglet.

The contented man can be happy with what appears to be useless. He can find worthwhile occupation in forests and mountains. He stays in a small cottage and associates with the simple. He would not exchange his worn clothes for the imperial robes, nor the load on his back for a four-horse carriage. He leaves the jade in the mountain and the pearls in the sea. Wherever he goes, whatever he does, he can be happy–he knows when to stop. He does not pick the brief-blossoming flower; he does not travel the dangerous road. To him, the ten thousand possessions are dust in the wind. He sings as he travels among the green mountains. He finds sheltering branches more comforting than red-gated mansions, the plow in his hands more rewarding than the prestige of titles and banners, fresh mountain water more satisfying than the feasts of the wealthy. He acts in true freedom. What can competition for honors mean to him? What attraction can anxiety and greed possibly hold? Through simplicity he has Tao, and from Tao, everything. He sees the light in the “darkness,” the clear in the “cloudy,” the speed in the “slowness, the full in the “empty.” The cook creating a meal with his own hands has as much honor in his eyes as a famous singer or high official. He has no profits to gain, no salary to lose; no applause, no criticism. When he looks up, it is not in envy. When he looks down, it is not with arrogance. Many look at him, but nobody sees him. Calm and detached, he is free from all danger, a dragon hidden among men… -Benjamin Hoff

The quote above is directly from the book The Te of Piglet and, to me, perfectly represents how I choose to not give a fuck.

My irresponsible 17 year old daughter is an alcoholic, so your 21 year old can’t be any better

February 26, 2015 by Anthony Mattke Leave a Comment

51RMKbiOXrL._SL500_AA300_Yeah, that’s quite a title… Sorry about that. Please keep in mind that this post is 90% rant.

I was browsing some headlines this morning when I came across this gem posted a couple days ago on the Washington Post blog #PostEverything… As you can imagine, by the time I finished reading this I was ready to leave a few comments of my own. But in my “better judgement” I decided to subject you to my rantings. Sorry.

The TL;DR of this story is that Anne Skomorowsky, a psychiatrist at Columbia University Medical Center, has a 17 year old daughter that is a careless drunk. She runs from the police breaking up a party loosing her phone. She falls when drunk and breaks her phone. This leads Anne to project these actions on EVERY college student including those who are of legal age to drink, purchase pistols, and get a concealed carry license, unlike her daughter. (In most states, YMMV)

Ms. Skomorowsky asks, “Just imagine my daughter’s iPhone was a gun” Since it seems you have failed to teach her responsibility and self-control, we’re all very glad it wasn’t. Also, in which state is it legal for a 17 year old to carry a concealed weapon? She goes on to describe a situation where her daughter would lose the gun, or drop it while drunk. First off, how many gun owners randomly pull a gun out while running through the woods, or down the stairs with their friends. More so, what idiot takes a weapon to any event where you plan to drink!?

A gun is a far cry from the level of responsibility required when purchasing your first Bic pen. Please do not try to correlate these actions, or project them on the rest of society. You would think someone who teaches psychiatry would be able to recognize that their argument is primarily based on emotive reasoning, but then again, that implies they are capable of a logical thought progression.

A gift for my Valentine

February 13, 2015 by Anthony Mattke Leave a Comment

A few months ago I had a terrific gift idea for Jessi and I figured that Valentines day would make the perfect occasion… We were married on Friday May 31st back in 2013, but we kept the whole thing pretty simple. We got married at a retired Minister’s house just before lunch time… he was on oxygen (not kidding), and I would guesstimate he had 3,542 dogs in his back yard begging to come inside and see who came over. Afterwards we went to lunch, and spent the rest of the day getting things prepped for the housewarming BBQ wedding party we had planned. But as usual I digress… Even so we moved into the house back in November of 2012, neither of us were real decor savvy. The walls are far too bare, and there hadn’t been any photos hung up. So, for Christmas I started plotting.

As a little stocking stuffer I had a photo of us printed using Fracture. It was a picture from our first Christmas party together, and probably the first night a lot of our friends found out we were together. I’ll always remember that night sitting in my VW New Beetle trying to take a selfie of us… and me consistently blinking when the flash went off. We must have taken 20 pictures.

So, after she opened the photo. I asked her if we could hang it in our hallway. I told her I wanted to start hanging more things there, and that I wanted to treat it as a family photo wall. Cheesy, I know, but something that I think would special to us both.

Shortly after Christmas I put my real plan into effect. I wanted to find someone to create a unique Wedding Certificate piece. I knew I wanted it to be done by hand, with lots of calligraphy, but I had no idea where to look. I contacted several folks on Etsy without finding what I really wanted. Luckily I stumbled across Sally’s website. We exchanged several emails and a few phone calls throughout the next couple weeks, she helped me pick out the style of calligraphy and provided some example text while I edited and made perfect for us. I even went as far as to spend a bit of time in Photoshop pasting and transforming some graphics I found into a horrible looking Japanese Cherry Blossom tree.

But somehow, she was able to create something beautiful from this hacked up monstrosity… The first thing I got back was a concept drawing of her own. She told me that she just wanted to get the overall shape down, and that the finished product would have much more detail. I was overwhelmed. For the first time I could really start to picture the finished product. I sent both of these photos to some of our female friends that I could hopefully trust to keep the secret. The overall consensus was extremely positive.

After another week of waiting in anticipation, Sally sent me a photo of the final product. When I opened the pictures, my jaw absolutely hit the floor. This complete stranger was able to produce something that I could barely describe, something that only existed as a picture in my head.

I happily sent her the final payment for her work and eagerly waited for the package. While we waited I purchased a frame, and an archival mat. Unfortunately, I’m horrible at hiding things like this, so once it arrived I ended up showing her… and I am happy to report that she LOVES it. But I also realized we had a problem. The artwork wasn’t exactly centered on the cotton rag paper she did it on, which meant I had to get a custom mat cut. No one in town did that sort of thing in-house, so I ended up ordering a couple of mats from Archival Methods. They ended up being a great company to work with, they turned my order around and shipped the very next day. So, here it is… hanging up in our hallway.

We haven’t signed it yet. Honestly, we’re a bit scared to. We’ve both been practicing our signature… trying to come up with something that would be presentable. Maybe we’ll get brave tomorrow and sign it on Valentines day. =)

Superb Owl 49

So many folks are saying this years game lived up to all the hype… I for one couldn’t disagree more. While I’m not a mega fan when it comes to football, I’d like to think I know a great game from a boring one. And for the most part, yesterdays game put me to sleep.

Sure, the last 5 minutes were great. It had everything you could ask for! The Patriots moved ahead with just 2 minutes left on the clock, and the Seahawks nearly came back for a win… but by now you’ve certainly heard about the worst call in the history of the game…. I won’t comment on that, but I will comment on what is, by far, the best reaction to that call you could ask to capture on live TV. Thank you Richard Sherman — you made my night.

After the Patriots took back possession of the ball, their first play with met with a bit of violence. I honestly can’t remember another fight like this in recently history. But it certainly made the evening interesting….

The game ended shortly after with the Patriots taking a knee and wining the game in a rather controversial outcome. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds with all of the #deflateGate drama still going on.

What about the commercials!? Horrible. Nationwide ran a commercial featuring the accidental death of a child. Nissian ran a commercial that confused audiences by playing “Cats in the cradle” in the background, and Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson from Parks & Rec) touted NASCAR in song… which was mildly disturbing. All in all, I think the commercials this year were rather awful. Which is a major disappointment, as it’s something most of us normally look forward to.

Although disappointing, at least football season is over! NHRA drag racing starts up Feburary 8th at Pomona Raceway!!

Hello World!

January 31, 2015 by Anthony Mattke Leave a Comment

Hello World! My name, as you may have guessed, is Anthony Mattke. I am a network engineer in northern Indiana with over 15 years of experience in the IT industry. I’m also an occasional guest on the Packet Pushers podcast and blog, a Tech Field Day delegate, a pseudo introvert, and suffer from severe ADHD when it comes to my hobbies.

Seriously… I have an obsession control issue when it comes to hobbies… I think it all comes back to my desire to learn and discover. Once I get hooked on something I can’t stop researching and exploring the topic. Some of my other hobbies include bad photography, watch collecting, watching my mountain bike hang on the garage wall, saving babies from trees, not bowling, being too scared to fly my rc helicopter and selling it, amateur pyrotechnics, beer, collecting useless crap, video gaming, keeping freshwater cichlids, rescuing kittens from fires, pistol/rifle collecting along with target shooting.

As a technical blogger, I tend to talk about a lot of things in the industry.. but I don’t get to talk a lot about what is happening in my life. While I feel need that I do need to step up my game when it comes to technical writing, I also feel that I have a few things I would like to talk about when it comes to my personal life.

Because of that, and a few other reasons, I decided to build this site. Hopefully this won’t be just another personal project that never gets enough attention…. and if it does feel free to call me out on it!
